Have you ever had the experience when you stick the camera infant of your families face and everyone just freezes, the life and joy of the moment is just taken away because everyone is now aware of that camera. is it getting the right angle? Did I blink? How many chins is this photograph going to give me?
That is why I love doing family photography outside in a favourite area to that family. There’s nothing staged or forced. You’ll forget that I am there and suddenly that life and joy is captured on camera with no one worrying about it, at the end of the shoot you’ll have photographs that will have captured your family just as they are. Nothing forced at all.
I think being able to take photographs of other peoples families is such a privilege, being able to documents small moments and milestones in peoples lives is fascinating.
As a parent I know how special these photos can be, it is something to take out in later years and reminisce about. I personally am forever photographing my family, as a photographer it is something that is just instinctual for me to do. However the photographs on my walls, especially of my daughter are not ones that I have taken. They are ones done by other professional photographers. The reason is simple. I didn’t take them, my daughter smiles differently and poses differently for other people. There are different memories attached to them.
